Study habits and the way you chose to study can help improve your memory overall and make you retain the information much better than usual. The way I studied for the first exam in our psych class was by reading through the notes, and creating flash cards with key terms from the chapters. I also filled out the study guide and read over that many times. After researching good study habits, researchers say that reading through your notes can be one of the word ways to improve memory. Researchers also said just reading through your notes rarely increases your results but will show a decrease in the results of your test. I also procrastinate a lot which leads me to waiting till the last minute to study for my exams. Another great way to study is by spreading out your studying. This means spending time studying for 30-60 minutes per day instead of cramming all of your studying into one night. Another great study habit for improving memory is by chunking things out. If you have a large chapter to cover, it is best to read through it completely a few times then begin to process the information in smaller pieces. I believe my study habits are not the best, but for second exam I will imply new study habits that will help improve my memory for the information on the test.

The increase of kids playing first person shooter games and gore games has had a dramatic increase over the past 20 years. It has led to many negative criticisms and associations with children. Some negative affects that have been associated with kids playing violent video games is that they see increases in aggressive behaviors and actions in their daily lives. It also shows increases in aggressive thoughts and angry feelings overall making kids more negative than normal. I believe that kids playing violent games can spark an increase in violence but isn’t the only reason why some kids act out. Another big reason of why kids become aggressive and violent is due to the environment which they are raised in. If a kid is raised in a household with parents who are physically and emotionally abuse each other their kids will have a much higher chance of being violent and abusive. Violent video games might be a way for kids to lash out on make believe characters and games instead of actually doing it in real life which is very beneficial for kids. Although violent video games have proven to show an increase in aggressive behaviors and thoughts, I do not believe they should create a ban or stop selling these types of games to young children because it gives a way for people to  get away from the violence they see on a daily basis in their homes. Its also a great way for kids to get their anger out by killing computerized characters and not acting out in real life.

I personally chose the “exploring the mind of a killer” TED talk because I have always had an interest in knowing what differentiates the mind of a killer and of an everyday person. Also, I’ve been a big fan of NCIS & Criminal Minds. When examining the factors that make up a killer, we consider genetics, brain damage, and interactions with their environment. When brain damage occurs, the timing of the incident plays a large role as well. High risk genes or the “violence gene” can be found in the normal everyday person, but are found more intensely In people who kill. Growing up witnessing extreme forms of violence can be a larger factor in why people become psychopathic killers. Personally, I found that the fact that genetic makeup and brain make up can influence the tendencies of a killer from generations to generation was the most interesting point in the talk. I found Jim Fallon a very trustworthy and reliable source because he performed multiple brain scans on known psychopathic killers and his own family tree which all showed the same results. Also, Fallon is a professor at the University of California and has been a neuroscientist for about 35 years so I believe his information provided is very credible. A research study that I would perform would be a study on the number of psychopathic killers that were women and men. I would compare these numbers because the variance of the High Risk Gene is found in our mothers and which is then passed to their son genetically. I want to see if it is true that men are more known to be classified as psychopathic killers than women.

I chose to critique one of Mythbusters experiments which questioned “Do larger breasts equal bigger tips?”. The experiment was set up to determine if larger breasts brought in more tips by varying breast size on a daily basis ranging from small, medium, and large. The data concluded that women with larger breasts will in fact bring in more tips than small or normal breasts. Men gave 30% more to women with large breasts as women gave a whopping 40% more in tips. The original hypothesis made for this experiment can be held true as the experiment showed about larger breasts bringing in more tips. The independent variable in this experiment would be the Coffee Shop she was working at, while the variable changed would be breast size. One positive of this experiment was keeping this waitress at the same shop, dressed the exact same every single day, with the same amount of transactions sold per day except varying her breast size to show an accurate depiction of larger breasts bringing in more tips. I believe that one problem that could vary this experiment is having a waitress who isn’t good with service or being a nasty person overall to their costumers but to prove that this hypothesis is actually true it was good that she was a fantastic waitress overall. Its now proven that men and women are willing to shovel out more money to a person who catches their eye or they find sexually attractive. Overall, I feel like this experiment was conducted very well and it helped give a very good understanding on how bigger breasts can bring in larger tips for a waitress working anywhere in the world.

Hello my name is Zach Petiet and I am a first year OT student at Elizabethtown College. I graduated from Saucon Valley High School in Hellertown, Pennsylvania. I love playing football and lacrosse as I will be apart of the Blue Jays Lax team. I am a huge fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and Penn State Football. I also enjoy going to the beach and hanging with my friends. I am interested in possibly minoring in Psychology and wanted to get a feel for what it is all about. I took a Psychology class my Junior year of HighSchool and really enjoyed it so I wanted to get a greater feel for it at the college level. When I hear the word “psychology” I think of the study of how the human mind works and functions. I am very interested in learning about The brain because I want to have a good understanding on how the brain works and how it functions. I am also interested in learning about how to improve your memory because the older you get, the more you need to know. Lastly, I am very interested in learning about coping with stress because with college comes tons of stress and I want to have a good understanding on how to cope with it. My 3 least favorite topics are why we forget, what is addiction, and the mechanics of good sleep because they are topics I already have a little understanding of. By the end of this class I hope to have a large understanding of what psychology is and everything that goes into why the brain works the way it does.
