Personality tests

--Original published at Kyle's Gen Psych Blog

Throughout life people are often administered or choose to take various personality tests. Strangely enough despite all the tests i have taken results tend to be consistent. After taking the two tests i was classified as an ENFP personality type, something which i already knew and did not surprise me much. Then taking the Big 5 I again was told that I was an extrovert and very empathetic, although i was shown to have a low score in conscientiousness.

What i did find surprising though was the color quiz, as after taking the test it was scarily accurate. Describing habits that i had been showing these past few weeks looking back, one being the wanting of change but the unwillingness to put the effort in to make such change happen, among others. Overall i found this test to be accurate but the reliability of it is unclear to me.

The online personality tests seem to be similar in nature. Many of the questions are restated in each test. The personality types I scored are also similar. The Jung Typology Test attributed me with the personality type INFJ (Introvert, Intuitive, Feeling, Judging). People with this personality type are empathetic and inspirational. They tend to choose careers in the fields of liberal arts, such as writing. This personality type describes me fairly well. This test seems credible. The Type Theory test listed my personality type as ISFJ or “Conservator.” People with this personality type are loyal and work-oriented. Though this personality loosely describes me, the credibility of this test is questionable. The questions in this test are somewhat vague. My personality according to the Big-Five test is mostly Intellect/Imagination. This is fairly accurate. The results of the Color Test state that I am very stressed in my current situation. This is true, however, the other aspects of the results are inaccurate. This test does not seem substantially credible as colors cannot determine traits.

First Impression Week 11

The tests all gave me results that seemed pretty accurate to myself, however they varied in credibility. They all told me I was an extrovert but each one had different overall results. One test told me I fell into the “ESFJ” category, another told me I was an “ENFP”. These two tests were both about the same length and asked similar questions but somehow gave two different results. I would explain this as me changing my my answers if I was unsure or maybe a little dishonest with myself, which is the most obvious issue with these tests. It’s very easy for someone to lie, not even necessarily on purpose, to get results that they WANT to get rather than what might actually be accurate. Another test, the color test, seemed like complete garbage. It basically amounted to picking colors in a certain order. It made me think of astrology and horoscopes, and the results were sometimes even written with improper grammar such as “He is being forced to be happiness and pleasure on hold for new due to his limiting circumstances.” The test didn’t even ask questions, I don’t see how you could learn anything about someone from having them choose colors. All in all, I think the first three tests seemed reliable (for something so bare-boned), they gave what I would call accurate results and it seemed like the results made sense based on the answers I gave, but it is of course limited by how honest someone is. The fourth test however was completely worthless.

Personality: Week 11 First Impression

I always enjoy taking the fun, free quizzes online that range from what my spirit animal would be to what my personality type is. The four quizzes I took were longer than other quizzes I have done in the past and I think they asked well array of questions to pinpoint personality types. My results of the four tests were pretty constant with small switches between specific traits.

The fist two personality tests I took I received the exact same result. My personality type was ISTP. This stands for introvert, sensing, thinking, and perceiving. It was described as fearless and enjoy excitement. The humanmetrics site went into more depth with percentages saying there was little preference between introvert and extrovert and between thinking and feeling. I have more of a preference for my feelings rather than intuition.

From the other two tests my results were aimed more towards an extrovert and being more socially active. The BIG5 site added the traits of agreeableness and openness to experiences. The colorquiz site included my need for excitement and social interaction. Both comment on being very observant and diligent in my work.

From these four personality tests I do agree with the results to match my personality. Even though it fluctuated between introvert and extrovert or feelings and thinking, I believe I do change some of my views when present with different situations. Sometimes I could be social and active with groups of people while other days I’d much rather keep to myself. The common characteristic that I agree with is need for excitement and adventure; I am always ready for last minute plans that can turn into a really fun experience. What I found most shocking was that the color quiz proved to me the most accurate to describing my personality type, with the only data collected was my sequence of colors that I chose two times.

When I finished taking the four personality test they all seemed to turn out similar. All the test had in common was that I do not open up which is true and is something I need to work on. Another one that comes up was that I am too trusting. This is true, I do trust a lot of people but I feel as if it is not a bad thing because of the people I have in my life. A couple of the test’s showed that I judge people before knowing them. This is very true but thats how this generation is. Recently I have been doing a better job of knowing them before judging but I still can work on it. The last personality trait is that I like to avoid arguments and conflicts. This is very true as I do not like to make people mad but its not to a point where I do not speak my mind. That personality is in the middle as I do both sides of it. Some of the test say I’m unorganized and unprepared and I do not agree with how low I scored on that personality. I am usually on time for appointments, class, and have a clean room. Sometimes it might get a little hectic but not to bad. Another personality trait I disagree with is that I do not understand long-term consequences. I do understand them but at the time f the act I do not care or want to take the risk but I’m 100% aware of the consequences for the action. Overall the personality test’s showed many of my personality traits but had some flaws along the way. I would recommend these test to other people to see to get an idea about their own traits.

First Impression- Personality

I’ve taken many of these tests before, and I’m very interested in how my answers change over the years as well. For the Humanetrics Jung Typology test, I got INFJ. This is something that has stayed pretty consistent all throughout my life. It stands for Introvert (I), Intuitive (N), Feeling (F), and Judging (J). All of this means that I am influenced most by my feelings, intuition, and experiences rather than other’s and facts. “INFJs are deeply concerned about their relations with individuals as well as the state of humanity at large,” is a sentence I highly agree with. I find myself always worrying about the future or planning way too far in advance. I also agree with this, “[Introverts] are sometimes mistaken for extroverts because they appear so outgoing and are so genuinely interested in people — a product of the Feeling function they most readily show to the world.” I often take this test and flip-flop between the extrovert and introvert, however I truly feel as I am an ambivert, a mix of the two. That is one big criticism I have, they should add an ambivert option. “INFJs are true introverts, who can only be emotionally intimate and fulfilled with a chosen few from among their long-term friends, family, or obvious “soul mates.” is especially true for me as well. I have always had friend group problems because they were too big for me to really connect. Now, I can keep my circle very small and I am really happy with my quality or friends, not the quantity. On the Jungian Personality type test, I got ISFJ. That is a little different for me, but everything is mostly the same. The difference is the S, sensing. This one seems accurate for me as well. It is very service and work orientated while being very loyal. I agree that I am usually trying to help someone or do community service. The jobs for these types are very similar to what I’m studying, what I used to study, and what I currently do. I love doing secretarial type work and I’m an office assistant for the Tempest Theatre Box Office and at Facilities Management, so it makes sense why I’m good at it. I was also an education major and a psychology major now, so those also align with the answers. The one critique I have for this test is the lack of other options. It was either extremes or both things I do depending on the situation. For me, many things are on a case by case basis or my answers can change depending on the situation, so it was sometimes hard for me to pick an answer and that can greatly affect your outcome. For the psychometrics test I scored Extroversion 41, Emotional Stability 26, agreeableness 80, conscientiousness 76, and intellect/imagination 34. I ended up answering in the middle for many of these questions, but the ones I scored high in, I definitely agree with. I like having many options for answers like in this test, but the neutral button often gets misused in data. There can be many reasons someone chose that, and it’s impossible to tell why. Like I said before, for me, many things are on a case-by-case basis for me and it depends on how I’m feeling in the moment in that certain situation to know how I’ll feel or think. The color test was definitely the most interesting and objective in my eyes. Although, the answers weren’t very far off from the truth, but they weren’t as accurate as the others. Some of it was just horoscope bullshit like usual, but the part that got me spot on was the existing situations and the restrained characteristics. Those were scary accurate for having me just pick colors that made me feel good when I first saw them. Overall, I’d say the personality tests are fairly accurate at depicting us, with a few exceptions. I would trust the validity of the first two over the last two for sure, simply because they have proven to be accurate, however I wish those ones were more than just picking between two sides basically. I think one way to make them more accurate is to add more options for answers. I think the types cover a broad demographic but there are missing populations like ambiverts, such as myself.

Week 11- Personality tests

--Original published at Site Title

The four tests seemed to give me slightly different results about my personality. I believe some were accurate in representing how I perceive myself and my personality, however some characteristics were quite far fetched. The first test labeled me as ENTJ consisting of 34% extraverted, 12% intuitive, 19% thinking, and 38% judging. The description of this type of person described me pretty accurately.  It stated little encouragement was needed for this person to make a plan. That this individual was decisive, sees what needs to be done and makes it work, and actively applies material to the world.  Other attributes consisted of remaining stable through stress, mechanical memorization, organization skills, and having a large social circle. I believe these characteristics describe the type of person I am very well.  This test provided the most information out of the four even offering job options a person of this personality would do well at.  The next test placed me as an ESTJ personality type considered a “Administrator”.  It describes this type of person to be in touch with the external environment, loyal, and responsible.  This site didn’t go in to full details or more information but a simple brief summary. I could see myself as having these traits as well.

Test number 3 gave you the percentile you fell based on five markers after ranking a series of questions. I scored 96% extraverted, 52% emotionally stable, 76% agreeableness, 95% conscientiousness, and 28% intellect/ imaginative.  This means my determined personality was outgoing, not very stable, friendly, diligent, and traditional.  The higher you scored percent wise the more you exhibited a certain trait. The last test looked at color choices you were to choose dependent on mood, I found this one least accurate.  The color test then separated results into categories of existing situation, stress score, restrained, desired objective, and actual problem.  My results concluded that I need excitement and constant stimulus in my life.  I am said to have a thriving need for adventure and stress the importance of freedom and independence.  I am to be open and emotionally involved in a relationship but distant from those close to me. I’m bothered when my needs and desires aren’t understood and have a self centered attitude.  I supposedly desire to make a good impression and to be seen as unique.  I plan and scheme and I am greatly impacted by what others think of me.  My problem is having things stand in the way of freedom to make own decisions. I am said to work hard to build my position and status. I feel that the outcome or statement this source gave me could be applicable to all people or individuals and not necessarily just myself.

I don’t believe any of these sources provided a completely accurate representation of my personality type.  They are said to all be similar but provided quite different results. I however did find myself relating to some of the characteristics the descriptions had described.

Week 11 First Impression Post

--Original published at Site Title

I feel that the Briggs Myers’ personality test has always been quite accurate for me and known to be accurate for many people. The result of my test was ENTP. I am somewhat of an extrovert, I feel as though I’m more intuitive than sensing, and that I’m more thinking than feeling in my approach to things. I was surprised to see that my biggest percentage was for perceiving over judging; I’ve always considered myself a judgemental person.

The Personality Test Center’s Type Theory assessment told me I am an INFJ. I took both this test and the Briggs Myer’s test consecutively, as well. These results makes me question this website in particular, as I know I have had fairly consistent personality type results in the past coming from the Briggs Myers’ test. I did however agree with the assessment that I have a judging personality.

The Big Five Personality Test ranked intellect and imagination highest for me, then extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and emotional stability, in that order. I find this test to be strange in the particular things it measures. I think intellect and imagination should be separate, and I think agreeableness and conscientiousness are traits too subjective and specific to determine an overall measure for. Emotional stability doesn’t seem like something that can even have a ballpark measurement from the few basic questions about it, like “do you often feel blue?” or “do you have frequent mood swings?”

The color quiz seemed astonishingly accurate in the result it gave me. However it seemed like maybe some of the explanations may just be easy for any person to apply to themselves and their own problems. The website seemed outdated and unprofessional. I even had a friend take the quiz to see how the results varied, and we found that many of the explanations between the two of us were extremely broad and similar, if not the same. All of the personality tests seemed incredibly basic, outdated, and unofficial. I personally believe personality is too complex a topic to classify.

Personality

The first personality test was the Jung Typpology Test that tested for feeling, emotion, and why I do the things I do based on the way I think. My results came back as “ENFJ” which stands for extrovert (6%) intuitive (9%) feeling (25%) and judging (6%). I agree with all of these, except intuitive. I do not see myself as an intuitive because I do use reasoning a lot, especially while working out problems in my life. I do base my decisions based on gut feeling and good judgment as well, so these personality traits seem to be true. The Jungian personality test scored me as a “conservator” as I focus mainly on service and work. These two things hold true as I am a “people pleaser” as well as very involved in whatever work I have at the time. These results also noted that I am very loyal, which is true as well. I tend to stick with close friends and family and are very faithful to select people in my life. The Psychometrics Project test gave me the results of extroversion, emotional stability, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and intellect/imagination. These results were very similar to the other tests, besides giving me percentiles that I fit into based on the trait. This test I felt judged me more on how I reacted in situations with other people as well as my personal values on attention and helping people. Lastly, there was the color test which was by far the most unique out of all the personality tests; but also gave me broader answers. This test gave me results pertaining to my own identity and how I have an eye for the beauty in things. It also goes into saying how I like to feel unique and important with still giving high standards to the people around me, especially the opposite sex. Somehow, this color test fit me very well; despite it’s broadness, it goes into how I am independent and very concerned about being a respected human being. I am unsure of how these results came about based on colors that I chose, but it is interesting to see how all of the personality tests give very similar answers, even when they ask very different questions, or even no questions at all. Some results were very spot on based on how I am as a person, but others I felt were very broad and covered a lot of ground so they could be applied to almost anyone if necessary.

Week 11 First Impression Prompts – Personality

Hand writing on a notebook

We all want to know more about our ourselves, and psychological tests are one way to explore our personalities. While the full psychological tests are often long and require a fee to take, there are an abundance of free versions online. Take the four personality tests linked below, discuss how accurately they describe your perception of your personality, and discuss the credibility of each test. Make sure to use the tag “Personality” on your post. The first impression posts will be due by the beginning of class on Wednesday, 11/8. The refinement posts will be due at noon on Tuesday, 11/14.

I look forward to seeing what you write!
